It's funny isn't it? How a single photograph on your phone or a tatty one you've had stuck to the fridge for years or something dug out of an old biscuit tin in the loft can unlock a whole world of memories. And yet, often we don't take the time to put those stories into words. That's where Pick a Picture comes in.

It's easy as 1,2,3

1, Pick a picture

Something that gives you a nudge, a moment, a person, a place you can still see in your mind's eye.

2, Describe the picture.

Simple sentences will do, no need to try to hard. We'll give you a helpful prompt sheet to get you going.

3, Write your story

Three paragraphs, that's all it takes. Tell us:

* Who or what's in the picture?

* What's happening in the picture, what's the story behind it?

* And finally why you chose it, what it means to you.

Give your story a title, a good one, something that stays with you like an old tune!

Why it matters? ( Especially now)

In this fast moving screen based world, there's something powerful about picking up a pen and writing things down. It slows the brain down just enough for us to think clearly to remember more, to feel more.

For pupils, It's a chance to practise real storytelling, not just typing things out in bullet points. It encourages proper thought, structure, expression and self reflection. Skills that are too often elbowed out by emojis and voice notes.

Writing by hand connects head to heart. It builds confidence, Literacy and emotional resilience, all while creating something tangible they can hold, frame, and be proud of.

Once finished, we'll turn their story into a keepsake beautifully printed onto their picture, framed and displayed at our Pick a Picture Showcase!. They'll get two framed A3 copies: one to take home and one for the exhibition.
